Use a Password Manager, Not Your Memory

Reusing one password across accounts means a single breach anywhere unlocks everything. A password manager generates a long, unique password for every login and fills it in for you, so the only thing you have to remember is the one that opens the vault. Turn on multi-factor authentication for the manager itself, and start by replacing the passwords on your email and banking accounts — those are the ones an attacker goes after first.

Back Up on the 3-2-1 Rule

Keep three copies of anything you cannot afford to lose, on two different kinds of storage, with one of them off-site. In practice that is your working copy, an external drive at the desk, and a cloud backup that runs on a schedule you never have to think about. The part most people skip is the restore test: a backup you have never restored from is a guess, not a safety net, so pull a file back from each copy once a quarter.

Spotting a Phishing Email Before You Click

Phishing works on urgency, so the first tell is a message that insists you act right now — an account about to close, an invoice already overdue, a password expiring today. Check the sender against the domain it claims to be from rather than the display name, hover a link to read where it actually goes before clicking, and treat any unexpected attachment as hostile. When a message appears to come from a colleague or a vendor you know, confirm it on a phone number you already have, never one supplied in the email.
